Song: Never Seek to Tell Thy Love

            “Never Seek to tell thy love” is a poem by William Blake. William Blake was a 19th century writer and artist who is regarded as a seminal figure of the Romantic Age.He born in 1757 in London, England, William Blake began writing at an early age and claimed to have had his first vision, of a tree full of angels, at age 10. Now Blake was an established engraver, he began experimenting with printing techniques and it was not long before he compiled his first illuminated book, 'Songs of Innocence' in 1788. Blake wanted to take his poetry beyond being just words on a page and felt they needed to be illustrated to create his desired effect. Shortly after he completed 'The Book of Thel' and from 1790-3, 'The Marriage of Heaven and Hell', which followed on from his significant Prophetic books. These books were a collection of writings on his philosophical ideas and although they have nothing to do with his poetry, it was a sign of his increasing awareness of the social injustices of his time, which led to the completion of his 'Songs of Experience' in 1794.             This poem tell about the writer’s experience that he falling in love to a woman but he is never tell and hiding his feeling. He has strong feeling to her and he believe and confident that his love will acceptance. Then he try to tell her feeling to woman who he love but in fact, she have a sweetheart. Exactly she leave him alone so he feel sad and regret. In addition, love is a feeling that haven by other people between man and woman. If you falling in love, love can be make happy, freak and so on. But if you hide away your feeling and lost her or his love, love can be pain. Therefore, love should be allow to flow and happen naturally. So you can feel what love and know what is true love?

Never seek to tell thy love

Love that never told can be

For the gentle wind does move

  Silently, invisible

In the first stanza. It describe about the writer falling in love to woman, but he never told his love. He only hide his feeling. However, he has a strong feeling to her but he not expressed his felling like wind that blowing fast and sometimes the wind is quite and invisible. it is show how his felling that moment.

 

I told my love, I told my love

I told her all my heart

Trembling, cold, inghastly fears ….

Ah, she doth depart

In the fifth and sixth distich, there is the word that repeat again and again is “Told”. “Told” in here tell about he will be expressed his strong felling to her. He is very confident and believe that his love will be response. Then in the seven distich, he is very nervous until all of his body like numb because of he will be expressed his feeling to her.

Soon as she was gone from me

A traveler came by

Silently, invisible ….

O, was no deny …..

In the last stanza, it told that her love is gone and leave him before he tell about his feeling to her but it’s to late. Then her sweetheart is come in the place for pick up her. the writer’s feeling is very sad and so regret. Whereas, he’s believe that his love will be respond. 

On other hand, we can look from social issue in the poem. Looking from ninth and tenth distich “Soon as she was gone from me”, “A traveler came by”. Those are told about the woman who he love leave him and choose gone with her sweetheart than she must listen the writer’s felling. Suddenly her sweetheart came. It make the writer’s felling is very sad, angry and regret to her. So their relationship is end,it is a social issue in this poem.

So the main of that poem is the writer’s experience that told about love and his regret, he has a big love, but he never told to everyone, he just hiding his feeling. When the writer want to expressed his feeling, it is to late due to the woman who he love gone with another man, so the writer feel regret “why the writer not expressed his feeling immediately?”. Therefore, if you love someone you must told immediately before he/she leave us with another people. So love should be allow to flow and happen naturally.

William Blake – The Lamb  

William blake was an English poet, painter, and printmarker. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake is now considered  a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual arts of the romantic age. His prophetic poetry has been said to form “what is in proportion to its merits the least read body of poetry in the English language. His visual artisty led one contemporary art critic to proclaim him “far and away the greatest artist Britain has ever produced. In 2002, Blake was placed at number 38 in the BBC’s poll of the 100 Greatest Britons. Although he lived in london his entire life (except for three years spent in Felpham), he produced a diverse and symbolically rich ceuvre, which embraced the imagination as “the body of God” or “human existence itself” (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Blake).

William Blake wrote many poems, one of them is The Lamb. In this poem, he shows about religion issue. We can see from the last sentence of the poem “little lamb, God bless thee!”. In Christian, Yesus is called as the lamb of God in Yohanes 1:29 and 1:36. It refers to Yesus as the main victim and be perfect to redeem the sins. Lamb takes a big role in Christian and Jewish (http://www.gotquestions.org/Indonesia/Yesus-anak-domba-Allah.html) . Why lamb be the symbol of Yesus? Because lamb is the only one of animal or thing which can’t able to be possession by a spirit.

Little Lamb, who made thee?

Dost thou know who made thee?

Gave thee life, & bid hee feed

By the stream & o’er the mead;

Gave thee clothing of delight;

Softest clothing, woolly, bright;

Gave thee such a tender voice,

Making all the valest rejoice?

            Little Lamb, who made thee

This stanza told the reader how God treats the lamb. He gives many happiness of his live, such as giving the mead and the stream. Not only that, He also gives the bright and soft wool and tender voice. The first stanza is the center on the question of the creator. This stanza consists of 10 lines. Now, let’s step to the second stanza.

Little Lamb, I’ll tell thee,

Little Lamb, I’ll tell thee,

He is called by thy name,

For he calls himself a Lamb.

He is meek, & he is mild;

He became a little child.

I a child, & thou a lamb,

We are called by his name.

            Little Lamb, God bless thee!

This second stanza is the answer of the first stanza. It has 10 lines. The poet explains that lamb is created by the Lord. He also discribes that God same with lamb, because he is meek and mild. God calls himself as lamb “Lamb of God”. Blake bless the lamb because he feels like talking to the Lord. By creating this poem, he feels that he has close relation with God.

In conclusion, blake made this poem because he thinks that God is in lamb. Lamb is a symbol of God, because it is the only one of animal that can’t be possession by spirit. He make the similirities between
God and lamb.This poem takes moral issue of religion.
